He actually used consecutive first finger shirts to negotiate position shifts. I presented this at the nut here, but the same pattern can be used on the first fret or anywhere on the neck. Be sure to reach behind the nut with your first finger when in that position so you are practicing the same pattern wherever you are on the neck.
