His early life consisted of rampant wickedness-- things from heavy drinking in his teens to being a slave trading ship captain. After becoming violently ill, he finally abandons that life of wickedness and devotes the rest of it in service to God. It was around 1764 when John Newton penned the words to this song. He was one that could not only speak these words, but wholeheartedly feel their meaning in his life. The first verse of this arrangement consists of a more reserved and laid-back sound. As it transitions into verse two, the arrangement becomes mournful and sad, which depict the words "through many dangers, toils, and snares..."
