He was an amateur composer and according to the 1911 census, worked as a glass bottle neck maker at a mineral water works. His traditional carol “Christmas Eve” was published in the Barnsley Chronicle on 23 December 1933. In 2023 the carol was rediscovered in the Barnsley Chronicle Archives and shared with the public to coincide with the 90th anniversary of Barnsley Town Hall. Performers should feel free to omit verses and or alter the text as required.
