With the request for a ballad and the sound and style of my good friend, Bob Fuson, in mind, I set out to write a piece that incorporates elements of jazz. As the Sun Sets was premiered by the University of Nebraska saxophone choir with the composer guest conducting. The version for trombone solo with trombone choir was created for and premiered by Joseph Alessi with the Louisiana State University trombone choir with the composer guest conducting.
