My inspiration for the melodic line is the 3 main words in the traditional Ave Maria text; "Ave" (Hail) higher in the staff for celebration, "Gratia" (Grace) mid-staff for acceptance, and "Dominus" (God) low in the staff for humility. The melodic range for Flute is thus quite large - a full two octaves, from Db above the staff to Eb on the bottom line. The cello accompaniment is the same in every bar of the entire piece; a circling minimalist 2 chord broken triad ostinato.
