The piece unusually sets the familiar text within an aching minor key, in a slow tempo, and with generally quiet dynamics. A highly memorable, singable and repetitive main theme is supported by rippling arpeggios over a descending bass line. Within the rocking 6/8 time signature, an often modal accompaniment also features chains of gently warm seventh chords. The piece is appropriate for most standards of solo soprano or tenor.
