The upper line is a musical realization of the mathematical sequence listed as A005812 in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. This sequence deals with "balanced ternary representation" and is self-similar at every third term, a property highlighted in mm. 25-29 in the approach to the grandioso climactic section.
