The theme of the variations is a 17th-century Swiss song called "Dursli and Babeli," a favorite of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who described it as "a charming story of peasant love." The melody is light and soaring, and it resembles a hymn that followed a century or so later, "This Joyful Eastertide.
