It was first recorded in a session under the leadership of Barney Bigard in 1936, although the band was essentially comprised of Duke Ellington’s Orchestra. There are a few versions of Caravan, with the B section being subjected to change compared to the original tune. Caravan has found its way into the film world, being featured in two Woody Allen films: Alice, and Sweet and Lowdown. It’s most notable appearance in films is definitely from the 2014 film Whiplash, where it forms an important plot element.
