Veni Emmanuel (composed 2022, duration ca. 5’ 10”) builds on the mystery inherent in the season of Advent, the text that presents us with many different visions of Christ (God with us, Wisdom from on high, etc.), and in the ancient, minor-mode tune itself. There are two complete statements of the tune with its refrain, one quiet and sedate, the other loud and joyous. The rest of the piece is essentially a free fantasy, culminating in an enigmatic right-hand solo a dozen or so bars before the end. This piece is contemplative and moody, with plenty of opportunity for colourful registrations.
