This arrangement is for string quartet, and includes four different verse treatments. The first verse has the traditional melodic line and harmonies that everyone knows. The second verse keeps the feel of the traditional hymn, but adds a descant line in the first violin part. The end result is a joyful sound, and is entitled the Joyful Variation. The third verse gives the melody to the cello, with the upper strings producing an angelic harmonic accompaniment, and is entitled Angelic Variation.
