This four-movement work, written to fully explore the capabilities of the horn as a solo voice, is comprised of a dramatic Sarabande, a highly virtuoso Toccata, a wonderful Romance and a Finale that reworks the second movement in a kind of fugue and brings the work to a spectacular close. The basic building block of this concerto, quite fittingly, is the fifth: you only have to think of the post horn or a hunting theme, which conjures up the sound of the perfect fifth. Concerto for Horn and Band werd geschreven in opdracht van hoornist Miguel Martinez Megias en het symfonisch blaasorkest La Armónica uit Buñol (Spanje). Het werk bestaat uit vier delen: een dramatische ‘Sarabande’, een bijzonder virtuoze ‘Toccata’, een prachtige ‘Romance’ en de ‘Finale’, waarin het tweede deel fugatisch wordt verwerkt en het concerto spectaculair afsluit. De bouwsteen van dit concerto is de reine kwint - een interval dat bij uitstek bij de hoorn past: denk maar aan de posthoornen jachtmotieven, die vaak op een kwint gebaseerd zijn. Het werk is niet programmatisch van opzet: de bedoeling van de componist was om de mogelijkheden van de hoorn alssolo-instrument zo goed mogelijk te benutten en het repertoire voor dit prachtige instrument te verrijken. Le concerto se fragmente en quatre parties, chacune dotée de son propre caractère installant un climat bien particulier. Rythmes tourbillonnants, changements de tonalités, cadences et traits lyriques viennent ponctuer cette oeuvre majestueuse.
