Breczinski composed Desiderium and Dementia on a commission from the Midwest Double Reed Society as part of that organization's 25th Anniversary commissioning project. The first performance of Desiderium and Dementia was given by oboist Andrew Brown, bassoonist Rodney Ackmann, and pianist Ellen Bottorff on a program of commissioned works at the University of Kansas on 5 October 2008.
