I was at a New England Conservatory of Music student recital last spring and I came away very impressed by a young violist, Deanna Badizadegan, who did the last movement "Adagio" from Shostakovich's Sonata for Viola and Piano, opus 147.  I immediately reminded myself that the last time I wrote a work for viola and piano was back in 1980.  So, I decided there and then to write a new one ASAP.
