Composed in 1787 for two violins, viola, cello, and double bass, the numbers of each instrument would have been multiplied depending on their availability and desirability for each occasion. The title reveals that it was likely intended to be performed at night for after-dinner entertainment. This arrangement for two pianos of the first movement Allegro captures every note and register of Mozart's original strings scoring, with nothing added.
