El Shaddai                                                                               arranged by Dan Heslink This marimba solo is an arrangement of the popular contemporary Christian song by Michael Card and John Thompson. It requires a 5-octave instrument (C – c4), although a 4½ -octave instrument is workable with transposition of some bass notes. The technical demands require an advanced player. There are many key changes, much mallet and hand independence, and extensive syncopations. Some contrapuntal sections are present, as well as one-handed double stop rolls and rigorous use of the instrument’s register. Select the tempo commonly heard on popular recordings, approximately 144 quarter notes per minute. Care should be taken that the melody is dominant. Since the counterpoint is widely spread, experimentation with mallets choices that elicit the best sound for the range is highly recommended. Sticking is recommended at places, but the player is advised to use the sticking that lays best for his/her bone and muscle structure. In the suggested indications the mallets are labeled 1 through 4, right to left. A wide range of dynamics is called for, and a strongly differentiated realization of differing levels of volume is important.
