The piece begins with repetitions of the refrain of the song played in dyads over the steady beat of the base in the ninth, seventh, and fifth positions. It then moves into a development of the melody using an alternating base played by the thumb with the melody played in the treble by alternating index and middle fingers, occasionally aided by the ring finger. The piece is a total workout in the coordination of alternating thumb and fingers and is recommended for advanced beginners to intermediate level guitarists. Midstream the arrangement shifts to a swing version of the melody and rounds off with a series of boogie-woogie dyadic riffs that echo the refrain in a rock-and-roll style reminiscent of Chuck Berry. The swing version of the melody together with the rock-and-roll sign-off show clearly the inspiration for the melody in the rhythm and blues tradition. The piece is somewhat difficult to locate in the normal major/minor key distinction having basically a modal character. The final chord brings the piece home to where it belongs in the blues. I give explicit hints about the fingering I recommend for both the left and right hand, especially in the beginning of the arrangement. These are fingerings that I personally feel comfortable with, others might prefer alternatives. The implied positions on the fretboard are given in parentheses. I use dynamics very sparingly, leaving this to the performers’ personal taste and inspiration.
