Each piece is in the key commonly found in hymnals for that particular hymn tune, though the meter varies. Performance tempos should be close to that desired for lively, majestic congregational singing, though they need not be identical. Most of these fanfares should be played forte as appropriate to the acoustics of the performance space. There are some instances where dynamics are specified for the purposes of contrast, though the final decision is up to the performers.Trumpets and timpani have been partnered for centuries as a symbol of majesty and glory.
