The First Circle [First Circle, ECM 1278, 1984] is one of the most important jazzcompositions of the last 50 years and it is a work that exhibits a rhythmic and harmoniccomplexity, interesting and surprising at the same time, that demands full attention fromthe performers. It is a true tour de force for any ensemble, be it instrumental or vocal.In 2004, I began to write what would be the main lines of this arrangement, whichwas delayed for 16 years, among other projects. And it is not until this period ofconfinement that I have been able to retrieve the initial notes from my portfolio.
