"Forward March" was originally composed as a piano solo when it won first place in the DAR American Heritage Instrumental music competition in 2017.  Composer C.E. Walz  performed the piece at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, in June, 2017.An explanation of the march’s theme: Reflecting on the theme of passing along family musical traditions, "Forward March" opens with the steady rhythm of a metronome that moves both music and family forward in time.  Imagine a young musician beginning the musical journey with a simple melody and progressing to a serious study of music. The melody evolves from a single voice to chords, suggesting a chorus of family support, as the music grows more complex. The march reaches its pinnacle as the musician draws upon an Early American tune for inspiration-- the confluence of the music of the past with the forward movement of the family. Finally the musician passes the musical torch to the next generation as we hear the simple melody again, this time with a new musician taking the reins and moving forward into the future.  100% approval rating by Grandma, who always wanted to join the DAR.
