Each of the carols begins with a unison (or can also be done asa solo) singing of the tune, with subsquent verses being for SSA or TB, building to a final SATB verse, sometimes with organ accompaniment. Short (4 to 8 bar) instrumental interludes (intermezzi) break up the verses. The interludes vary in color,not unlike the verses, with instrumentation ranging from solo recorder to oboe/bassoon duet to trumpet/trombone quintet.
