My teacher of 20 years Jack Russell describes the origins of these transcriptions My colleague, Kelsey Kirk, was a brilliantly successful public school music teacher. He was concerned that his French Horn students were falling behind his other brass players. I gave Kelsey a brief lesson on the Bb horn and he very quickly perceived the advantages of teaching this instrument. Before long, his horn students formed the nucleus of a large French Horn Choir. From their school band programs horn students came to me for weekly private lessons and monthly choir rehearsals. Newer players attended choir only when capable of playing the warm-up and three choir selections. This requirement was highly motivating. In choir I sat in the center of the front semicircle playing with the third horns. I gave cues with head and shoulder and breathing motions. The choir followed me with such precision that I often wondered if the audience appreciated this remarkable technique. Once, I asked a very young audience if our group had a Leader, they assured me that I was the Leader because I was the oldest. Well, it was a great way to grow old and I can heartily recommend the experience. Ho, the Kirks are retired in Mexico. Their son, Alan, came up thru the choir ranks and became a first horn.J.C.R.
