This song was first released by Sir Elton John on his double album of the same name in 1973.  Sara Bareilles recorded and released the song in 2013, on her album "Brave Enough: Live at the Variety Playhouse".  Bareille's version features a drastic reharmonisation of the piano accompaniment, giving the introductory bars a melancholy air, and turbocharging the emotive content of the chorus.  The vocal melody remains largely unchanged apart from some challenging embellishments.The vocal part is in the Contralto register, written from E3 to E♭5 (i.e. from E three ledger lines below the stave to E♭ on the top space of the stave.)
