This piece opens with a dark and reflective introduction that sets up the presentation of the hymn tune in a minor key. Only when the words "Grace, Grace" appear is when the tonality changes, but it is soon followed by the intensity of the word "sin". The musical personification of grace appears at the end of the piece where a quote of the original hymn tune appears.
