These pieces aim at giving small bands more advanced music within the framework of a "young band" arrangement. If you like the music, these pieces also sound great with a larger "full" instrumentation.PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:While based on a French tune, Huron Carol was rewritten in 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a French Jesuit missionary living near modern-day Midland, Ontario. De Brébeuf wrote the carol for the Huron/Wendat (Wyandot) people in their native Huron language. Huron Carol has left a legacy as Canada’s “First Christmas Carol,” and is still widely performed in Canada today.Huron Carol is written in the Medieval Dorian mode (scale). While sounding “mostly minor,” the Dorion mode has its own unique sound. Although this song could be performed in the natural minor scale, it would lose the characteristic color of the “major sixth tone” in the Dorian scale. In addition to the Dorian scale, this arrangement uses multiple other compositional elements connected with Huron Carol’s Medieval origins: * Besides the natural melody, there is also a very memorable countermelody. * A woodwind drone, beginning in unison and then expanding to open fourth and fifth tones * Some of these tones even move in parallel motion. Although classical music orchestrated the “big push” away from parallel motion, it continues to be an important part of the Medieval tradition. * All of these elements are presented in various groupings and layers.
