Research into immigrant diaries, local histories and Norwegian folk tunes proved fruitful in preparing for the composing of this work. A four note theme is developed melodically and harmonically throughout the work. The Norwegian folk song, How Can You Forget Old Norway?, is set polytonally against a cyclical ostinato constructed from the four note theme.
