The Introduction sets up the second movement by exploring the characteristic dotted rhythms and the intervals found in the Siciliana theme. The timpani have a prominent part in the Introduction, and woodwinds and brass have solo passages throughout. The Siciliana theme is static, and changes tone color rather than developing, while a narrative evolves in the accompaniment. While the introduction is energetic and almost boisterous at times, the Siciliana is envisioned as being heard through a glass dome, soft and remote throughout.
