The composer wrote this musicfollowing the death of his two year old son, great economic complications caused by "the Great Chicago Fire,", as wellas loosing four daughters in a tragic ship wreck, all less than a year apart. Spafford wrote this piece along with his wife,after questioning reality and seeking guidance from a higher power and coming to the realization that nothing in the pastcan be changed, and it is a waste of the future to dwell in misfortune, regardless of the severity. Throughout thisarrangement you can hear the struggle and the pain that this comes with this journey and trek for inner peace. This arrangement is very rhythmically simple, but more complex in harmonic structure and texture. There are noarticulation or dynamic extremes in this music, rather, each note should have a very delicate appraoch.
