The composer wrote the score together with the Te Deum HWV 278 in spring 1713. Both works were given their first performance on 7 July of that year in London's St. Paul's Cathedral for the celebration of the Peace Treaty of Utrecht, which, for England, ended the long military confrontation between the European powers and the France of Louis XIV in the War of Spanish Succession.
