Pretenders' songs, this beautiful and poignant 'Ode to a Kid' (I'd always assumed from the opening line - "Kid, my only kid ..." - was Ms Hynde's own, but apparently not) was the band's second 7-inch single release, and their first to be exquisitely penned by 'front-person' and founder, Chrissie Hynde. And it's as near perfect a 'pop' song as you could wish for (proving once again that many of the greatest - and undoubtedly, the most enduring -'pop' songs have been written by dedicated Rockers, whose art and musical craft have always taken precedence over - well-deserved - commercial success!). 'Kid' is a beautifully-crafted song with little to identify it as a 'punk' or 'new wave' creation (except, perhaps, for the driving repeated guitar chords and bass 'n' drums in those parts which contrast and compliment its predominantly laid-back 'country rock' feel). With trebly lead guitar (a Telecaster surely?) over a jangly acoustic (chord symbols provided), lead guitarist, James Honeyman-Scott's, carefully-wrought major pentatonic riffs and solos contributed greatly to this unforgettable song, and - tabbed, for the first time, as far as I'm aware - provide a fitting tribute to this great, and, sadly, long-deceased, Brit guitarist.
