This is a large-scale Concertante number for Viola and Piano, based upon some Klezmer motifs, with a fewmore contemporary harmonic touches. I meant to evoke a Holiday atmostphere at one of the old Shtetlalch, the Jewish enclaves scattered throughout the Pale of Settlement in the old Russian Empire. The time could have been toward the end of the week-long Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot).The almost non-stop singing and dancing were not just meant as enhancers of religious faith, but also as a powerfuldistraction from the clear and ever-present dangers to life and limb, just outside the Shtetl.The piano part is particularly elaborated; it is my belief that virtuoso pianists should find this compositionparticularly rewarding.
