ISBN 9790207022318.The Legend of Reuze When the bell rings, the Reuze comes out...episode 1 In the time of King Dagobert, at the beginning of the 7th century, Mardyck was one of the most beautiful towns on the North Sea. Its port, closed each evening by a heavy chain, contained hundreds of boats which sailed to England and Scotland.In the mist of a beautiful summer morning, the lookout man saw with horror strange boats advancing towards the city. Their curved prows were carved with a colorful and frightening dragon's head. As they advanced, you could hear the sailors screaming, tall and hairy, shouting at each other cheerfully by raising shields and swords to the sky.Before the sun went down, the Vikings had invaded the town, captured the maidens and killed the rest of the inhabitants.Part 2The Reuzes (the giants, in Flemish) plundered the region for several months until the food reserves were exhausted. They then returned to the campaign to sack other places.Their leader Allowyn took a bad fall during an attack and seriously injured his leg with his sword. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the men of the region - although not bellicose - massacred the disconcerted Vikings with stones before attacking their dying leader.Part 3The great Saint Eloi, the King's principal adviser, intervened and said to the raging fishermen:- “Shame on you, who hit a man on the ground. Carry this warrior to my house. I have big plans for him."Saint Eloi remained locked up with his protege for several weeks and then sent for the prettiest of the young girls in the area. He was then seen heading towards the Church of the Dunes followed by the warrior holding the girl by the hand.Le Reuze, baptized and then married under the eyes of the amazed villagers, gave them this speech as they left the church:- “My brothers, let those who know how to carve wood, work stone, forge iron and plow the earth follow me. We are going to build in the dunes the most beautiful fortress ever built for the peace and security of its inhabitants”.EpilogueThis is how Dunkirk was born. Le Reuze, wisely advised by Saint Eloi, warded off plagues and invasions from his city. This prosperous port gradually took the place of Mardyck, which disappeared under the sand dunes.
