This is the Composer's Edition of William Hawley's Miserere, which was commissioned and given its World Premiere by The Alexandria Choral Society, Kerry Krebill, Director, in 1998. The Latin text is that of Psalm 51, with the interpolation and peroration by the composer of the plainchant antiphon "Exultabunt Domine ossa humiliata". The following is the composer's note in the program for the World Premiere: Re: MiserereMy approach to this deep penitential psalm was accompanied by a feeling of joyous completion, as I had been planning to set the text for many years, having become familiar with its beautiful Latin through the many settings by composers of the past. Its great themes of contrition and supplication are illustrated in rich verse which echoes down the centuries, inspiring a sense of wholeness and the certainty of future deliverance. In my setting, I have included the plainchant antiphon, "Exultabunt Domine ossa humiliata" ("O Lord, may the bones which thou hast broken rejoice"), along with my own perorations of the chant, at the beginning and end of the psalm proper.
