In their original form, for four bassoons and one contrabassoon, they were written for the Oxfordshire Youth Bassoon Ensemble, with two of the parts designed for the less experienced players. In the four bassoon version here the pieces  have been performed by ensembles in Britain, Italy and the US. The opening motif of this movement refers to a 1960s popular song.
