Although Mussorgsky is regarded as a successful composer, most of his works have been rescored because of their insufficient instrumentation. This was the case with this overture, which is nowadays almost always played in the orchestration by Rimsky-Korsakov. Night on Bald Mountain tells the story of a witches� sabbath on a mountain in the Ukraine and consists of four parts played without breaks: Gathering of the Witches, The Appearance of Satan, The Worship of Satan, and The Witches� Sabbath.Night on Bald Mountain had oorspronkelijk een andere titel, toen het in 1876 geschreven werd. Hoewel Mussorgsky beschouwd wordt als een geniaal componist, werden de meeste van zijn werken omwille van een ontoereikende instrumentatiebewerkt. Ook met deze ouverture is dit het geval. Het werk wordt tegenwoordig bijna altijd gespeeld in een orkestratie van Rimsky-Korsakov. Night on Bald Mountain vertelt het verhaal van een heksensabbat op een bergin Oekra?ne en bestaat uit vier delen: Bijeenkomst van de heksen, De verschijning van Satan, De verering van Satan en De Heksensabbat.Eine Nacht auf dem kahlen Berge wurde im Jahre 1876 ursprünglich unter dem Titel Johannisnacht auf dem kahlen Berge geschrieben. So auch diese Ouvertüre, die heute fast ausschließlich in der Orchestrierung von Rimski-Korsakow gespielt wird. A Rimsky-Korsakov si deve la versione di Una notte sul Monte Calvo, opera riscoperta in un arrangiamento per orchestra sinfonica basato sulla versione finale di Mussorgsky. In apice al manoscritto, Mussorgsky ha ritracciato brevemente il contenuto del suo poema sinfonico: La riunione delle streghe, Il corteo di Satana, La Glorificazione di Satana e Il Sabba.
