The original version was for solo violin and organ (also available on SMP Press) While the organ part could mostly be played on a piano,  this version incorporates the organ pedal notes more clearly. The chorale melody was used by Bach in his St Matthew Passion, and is also in many hymn books as O Sacred Head Sore Wounded. For advanced performers, it is suitable as Prelude music throughout Lent, perhaps especially at a Tenebrae service. It could also be programmed as part of a recital. It is over five minutes in length. A MIDI recording is provided, and a performance with violin and organ is available in that version's listing.
