The piece is eclectic, jagged and technically exhilarating. It exists on a frontier between the present and the past, and between notions of "high" and "popular" art. As such it draws on influences as diverse as Dimitri Shostakovich, Ludwig van Beethoven, Alfred Schnittke, Sergei Rachmaninov and British and American progressive rock. The recording features the Edinburgh Quartet, with the Russian pianist Alina Kolonitskaya as soloist.
