To that end, although the pieces are meant to be played as a set, the ordering of the pieces in performance should be completely left to the performer’s discretion, even though they have been presented in the order in which they were composed. Performers should also feel free to regard all metronome markings as suggestions, and rubato and other expressive interpretations are very much encouraged, even when they are not marked. I have abandoned both descriptive titles and most indications of expression with the hope that artists and listeners alike will bring their own sensibilities, and even indications of tempo have been minimized.
