Kaplan fondly recalls interesting his young son in classical music by asking him to play the trills of this prelude while Kaplan played the rest of the notes in an impromptu, "piano-three-hands" arrangement. The fugue was analyzed in Kaplan's college counterpoint class as a quintessential example, exhibiting many of the standard fugal techniques in Bach's practice. Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has arranged several other great works for this ensemble, including many of his favorites from The Well Tempered Clavier (also available on this website). The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.
