SATB/SATB choir unaccompanied or with optional double string quartet SKU: EC.2459 Composed by Randall Thompson. Multi-Movement/Large Choral Work. Catholic Year C All Souls Day. Funeral, 20th Century, Faith, Lament/Grief/Sorrow, Praise/Thanksgiving. Full choral score. Duration 1 minute. E.C. Schirmer Publishing #2459. Published by E.C. Schirmer Publishing (EC.2459). ISBN 600313424595. UPC: 600313424595. 8.5" x 11" inches.Commissioned on February 23, 1957 by the University of California and completed in March of 1958, this work is not a liturgical Mass. It is a Requiem cast in the form of a dramatic dialogue between two SATB choruses depicting the triumph of faith over death. The performance time is approximately an hour if one honors the composer’s wish for a two-minute pause between each of the five parts. This work can be done a cappella. Alternatively, the composer wrote an accompaniment for two string quartets for which the score and parts are available on rental. (Essentially Quartet I doubles Chorus I and Quartet II doubles Chorus II.) The strings undergird the choral parts and are not intended to replace a chorus nor to be performed without the singers.
