Full fingering suggestions (as used by the arranger) are given. Scarborough Fair is a much-loved traditional English ballad, the text of which dates back to medieval times. It has been recorded many times by contemporary artists, most famously, Simon and Garfunkel. In making this arrangement I am attempting to create a work suitable for the more-advanced or concert player. My intention has been to use the original theme to construct a piece with structure and harmonic depth. Scarborough Fair is composed in the beautiful, ambient Dorian mode. It is firstly presented in A Dorian and midway, modulates to D Dorian before returning to the original mode with a coda. By adjusting the sixth degree of the scale the theme is also heard in Aeolian mode. I am excited at the idea of using well-known themes to create a concert repertoire suitable for all environments and which will appeal to guitarists and non-guitarists alike. I have also tried performing the piece with a capo placed at the second fret when I have felt my programme needed more harmonic variety.
