It's basically my impressions of the sights and sounds of seagulls while walking around the city where I live. Seagulls seem to make an amazingly wide variety of sounds, and I think I was able to capture a few of them in this piece. I consulted with some professional woodwind players and was told the effects should work fine. Some of the oboe writing is apparently a bit low, and might be better played slurred. I often see a single seagull perched on top of a neighbor's house (who we nicknamed "Egbert") - hence the quote from a popular tune.
