The overarching theme of the poem is creation and destruction, and specifically the mythic birth and impending demise of the Earth as a consequence of human corruption. Part III is actually a barcarolle which in the present iteration, featuring wind soloists instead of chorus, is intended to evoke a gondola winding its way through the fabled canals of the "Most Serene Republic of Venice."
