Serpens is the only constellation that is divided into two parts by another constellation. Ophiuchus stands in the middle of the snake, holding its head (Serpens Caput) with his left hand, and its tail (Serpens Cauda) with his right. The head is the larger half, covering over twice the area of the tail. Serpens is one of the 48 listed in Ptolemy’s Almagest in the second century, and can be seen in the northern hemisphere. The brightest star in the constellation is Unukalhai (Arabic for the serpent’s neck), and the tip of the tail is the star Alya (Arabic for tail). The melody is based on the Phrygian major scale which is used in Indian classical raga and Arabic music, as well as in Spanish, Egyptian, and Hebrew music.
