Boismortier verstand es, die elegante Haltung seiner Musik mit den vielfältigen Kompositionsarten seiner Zeit zu verbinden. So sind die Sonaten sehr verschieden, unter anderem bezüglich der Satzformen. Alle drei Stimmen werden annähernd gleichwertig behandelt. Obwohl im Originaltitel als Sonaten für drei Flöten bezeichnet, klingen alle Stücke auch mit drei Violinen oder Oboen sehr gut. Gemischte Besetzungen sind ebenfalls möglich.
