This enchanting melody is from the fourth movement of Bach’s Cantata 140 which was composed in 1731 using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins as the text. The work is beautiful in its simplicity with only three melodic lines, demonstrating Bach’s counterpoint at its best. For greatest effect it is suggested that the trumpets and trombones play behind the band or to the right and left of the stage. Bach schreef een ontelbare hoeveelheid cantates. Deze cantate, waarvan de tekst afkomstig is van de gelijkenis van de wijze en de dwaze maagden, schreef Bach in 1731 voor de 27e zondag na Drievuldigheidsdag (de eerste week van deadvent) en is gebaseerd op een koraal van Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608). Het vierde deel van de cantate, waarin Bach’s contrapunt zich van zijn meest elegante kant laat zien, werd door Philip Sparke bewerkt. Het bestaat uit drie melodielijnenen is in zijn eenvoud wonderbaarlijk mooi.Johann Sebastian Bach schrieb in seinem musikalisch überaus produktiven Leben unzählige Kantaten. Diese Kantate, deren Text vom Gleichnis der klugen und der törichten Jungfrauen handelt, schrieb er zum ersten Adventssonntag. Philip Sparke bearbeitete daraus den vierten Satz, in welchem sich Bachs Kontrapunkt von seiner elegantesten Seite zeigt, für Blasorchester. Das Stück besteht aus nur drei melodischen Linien, ist aber gerade in seiner Schlichtheit wunderschön.
