The opening bell motif is used as transition between the three carols. " I heard the bells on Christmas day" is based on a poem written by  American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow on Christmas Day 1863 during the Civil War.  It was set to music by English organist J. Baptiste Calkin.   The poignant lyrics resound: I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play And mild and sweet their songs repeat Of peace on earth good will to men … "Carol of the Bells" is the popular minimalistic Ukrainian Carol.
