The piece was directly inspired by the playing of the Medici Quartet, and contains veiled references to Ravel's classic String Quartet in F. The work remains broadly tonal and melodic throughout, as it develops key themes and motifs. Lines are often derived from the octatonic scale, and the key interval of the augmented fourth. Some harmonies are the product of symmetries and inversions. This piece was the Winner of the 1999 Gregynog Festival, Young Composers' Award of Wales. It is highy accessible and is appropriate for higher standard musicians, including students and the more advanced.
