English. Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892).Sweet and Low is a poem written by English poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892) in 1849. Tennyson was the Poet Laureate from 1850–1892 succeeding William Wadsworth. His appointment was made upon the recommendation of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert. The Queen became an admirer of Tennyson’s. They met twice, in 1862 and 1883.The same year of his appointment, Tennyson married Emily Sellwood, a childhood friend. They had two sons. He later died on October 6,1892 at the age of 83 and was buried at Westminster Abbey.Tennyson was especially known for his shorter poems. Although some found his poetry too sentimental, they were highly popular. Some of his best-known poems include The Charge of the Light Brigade, Ulysses, In Memoriam, Crossing the Bar, The Lady of Shalott, Break, Break, Break, and Tithonus.Sweet and Low is a short lullaby written from the perspective of a mother with a young child at home waiting for the return of the father who is out at sea. It is a gentle, poignant poem and should be sung as such. .
