Considered by many to be Beethoven's masterpiece, it premiered on May 7, 1824, in Vienna at the Kärntnertortheater, Michael Umlauf and Beethoven co-conducting. With Friedrich Schiller's poem Ode to Joy adapted for the final movement, the symphony remains a major part of the repertoire.
